Monument Rock Snowfall
I started my day out by an early morning trip down I-25 to The Garden Of The Gods. The previous couple of days were quite moody in the area but, unfortunately, I had to work. Well, today I was off and I wanted to take a few moody pics in The Garden, so off I went.
I’ve shot damn near this same image so many times, yet I keep going back. I’ve got an image in my mind that I am hoping to capture one day. I’ve been close so many times. One day, the sky will be right and I can check this image off of my list of images I want to take. Today would not be that day…
I drove home thinking ahead to the coming days and trying to figure out when my next opportunity to head back to The Garden and catch those skies I wanted would be. Rumor was, snow was in the forecast for the following day. This would be nice for photography, but not for the skies I was hoping for.
After a few hours at home, I looked outside and realized the mountains, just West of my house. were engulfed in snow. I wondered to myself whether the snow that was supposed to arrive the next day had come early.
The snow began dumping pretty hard. When it did not let up, I decided to head out with the camera and see what I could get myself into. I figured a quick trip over to Monument Rock would be nice.
Above is an image I previously took of Monument Rock. Today, I was hoping to get a decent image through a falling snow.
Initially, I walked the dam that holds the Pond back. The snow was beginning to pick up and I was anxious for a shot. With that being said, I convinced my tripod to do a bit of tripod gymnastics and took the first shot of the day.
There is something mesmerizing about symmetry in nature….in this case, even if it is not natural. The snow in the two images on the right is an example of how making slight camera adjustments can really alter the story your image tells.
I was first introduced to the mullein plant while learning how to create a friction fire. Definitely a skill that is good to learn, but staying proficient is just as important; something I’ve slacked off on, unfortunately.
