The Best Laid Plans

Mike Tyson once said that, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” Well, this morning punched me in my mouth! Yes, I did just start out my blog post with a quote from Mike.

My intent was to get up at 0430 and go shoot a moonrise. Now, as seen below, I did shoot a moonrise, but not at all as intended. I intended to capture a windmill in silhouette with a sliver of a moon beside it. As I drove east out to the plains this morning, the moon already sitting in the sky told me I was late!

A Crescent Moon sits on the horizon as the sun's warm light begins to take over the cool blues.

An Early Morning Moonrise

I wasn’t very late, mere minutes at most, but those few minutes make a huge difference in photography, especially when wanting to photograph the moon on the horizon. It’s quick!

I ended up simply pulling the Five Billion Star Hotel over and shooting from the side of the road. Not quite what I wanted, but hey, getting up and failing is better than not getting up!

In the end, it’ll be okay as I’ve got an opportunity to try again this evening and tomorrow morning. Besides, this morning had +50mph wind gusts. Photographing windmills on windy days in low light isn’t my idea of optimal conditions. I’ll try again tomorrow and update the blog post then.

See ya!
