Fall 2022 in SW Colorado
Day 6
I got up on Day 6 and, as planned, shot the cabins. A nice fog rolled in and settled between the cabins and the mountains. In this particular shot, which lasted about 20s, a couple of cars drove through the scene leaving their head/tail lights streaking through the composition.
While I wait, others zoom
Much to my surprise, a herd of Elk rolled through my composition. Seems they'd been there for a while before I noticed them as it was a bit dark. It was quite dark and my settings we definitely not set to capture wildlife. Here is a composition from these few moments.
The Nerve! Walking through my composition like this! ;-)
Look closely at each of the three images shot from this area. In the first of the three images, you may notice a construction project in the upper right of the first image. I removed the construction equipment, but the dirt piles are still there. In the second and third, I made attempts to remove the project from the composition.
This may be the last Autumn where this composition exists.
Depicted in the image below is the construction equipment that I edited out of the first image as well as the construction site that I edited out of the second and third images. It appears that this composition is about to go through some drastic changes. I imagine, by next Fall, a structure will be standing in this area. Quite the view for them. Unfortunate for anyone wanting this composition in the future.
Construction Above The Cabins
On a more positive note, and before heading back toward the Curved Aspen, I grabbed a quick shot or two from a favorite spring of mine. After, I continued to the Aspens and picked up D.D. before heading to the ever-elusive Mystic Falls; Telluride’s secret gem.

David and I meandered our way through the woods to the always-beautiful Mystic Falls. I ended up not shooting anything from Mystic as, to me, neither the color nor the conditions were good. Guess I’d have to return another time. Darn.
After Mystic, D. Dolton and I parted ways. I went to lunch at Uno Dos Tres tacos in Telluride. After, I strolled over to find Lil'HI. I’d not been there before, so it took a bit of searching, but I managed to find the place okay. Pretty spot, tho the light was harsh so I did not get any images. Locating the spot was a win tho. I’d definitely keep the spot in mind in the future.
Along the lines of not shooting Little Hawaii, I did not get any more images from this particular evening, so if you wanna skip on over to the next day, now’s a good time if you are here to see images. ;-)
No, I didn’t end up shooting anything on this particular evening, but it wasn’t due to a lack of effort. I managed to get back in touch with Cap'n CO. We met at the Cabins for sunset. Yes, the same ones that I shot this morning. It’s always nice to revisit a place in different lighting. That’s why it is so difficult for me to check things off of my List-O-Places-To-Shoot. I always wonder if I could one-up my last best shot.
It wasn't the best sunset. Tho, lookin' back, I should have probably not been so lazy and shot those purple clouds atop Mt. Wilson. I say I was lazy because I didn't want to change lenses, so I simply didn’t shoot; that and the fact that I was a little bit perturbed. Tomorrow’s plans are The Cabins, The Highway, Cushman Lake, Bridal Veil, aspens across from Cushman, Last Dollar, The Overlook, and finally CR7. We will see how much of this holds true.
The reason I was perturbed…
Y’all…. We all love and recognize the beauty that is around us. When you are out there, please ask before you step in front of someone’s tripod and camera. You’ve got every right to be there and take photos as well. No photographer should deny you the right to walk up to a scene and take pictures. Any good photographer can easily work with people stepping into their composition. Heck, I’ve got images where there were probably 25 people in the scene and they’d always be there, but in the final product, you cannot see them. Tho, please, at least acknowledge those who were already there before you got there and before you step in front of them and take 643 pictures. With that, let’s fast forward to tomorrow…
