Key Events: Milky Way / Perseid Meteor Shower / Light Painting / Night Photography

The photo opportunities at Animas Forks during magic hours are brilliant themselves, but what about taking it a step further and diving into the realm of night photography?

This coming weekend is the New Moon which will be a perfect opportunity for Milky Way photos AND the Perseid Meteor shower! Throw in some light painting and we honestly can't think of any better way to shoot a night photo.

Animas Forks is an outstanding Ghost Town that sits high in the Rockies about 12 minutes form Silverton CO. There are many great structures still standing tall, with all of their mystery, big mountains surrounding the town on all sides and even a stream running through town.

We will be getting to Animas Forks around 6pm on Friday August 10th to scope out what we want to shoot on the first night. There are possible sleeping accommodations in Silverton, but there is also a lot of BLM and National Forest land all around where you can throw up a tent. This is what we will be doing. Please remember to bring warm clothing as the elevation is around 11,000 feet and it will be mighty nippy late into the night. If you are planning on tenting bring appropriate backcountry gear to ensure you are comfortable. I highly recommend bringing rain/wind gear as the weather can be extremely unpredictable, though there is no rain in the forecast... yet. In addition I will be bringing a few JetBoils with French Presses to keep the coffee going.

The Event is scheduled to be a night event, but that doesn't mean that you've got to stay up all night. Your schedule is up to you. Stay up all night and sleep all day. Nap a bit during the night and adventure a bit during the day. Whatever you choose, just think it through as far as food/shelter/clothing/inclement weather goes.
