Pastel Plans

I woke up this morning and knew exactly where I was headed. Quickly, I grabbed my gear, breakfast #1, and a coffee and I was out the door.

The skies were dark. Every now and then I could see a star or two, so I suspected the skies had thin high altitude clouds. That’s not at all what I was expecting based on the predictions I saw.

As I drove east, it became quite clear that I would be silly to continue to the destination that I had in mind.

Out east were clear skies. I’d planned to shoot in that direction, but boring! I glanced around and decided that I needed a composition that faced more westerly. GPS: Recalculating

I quickly thought of another composition that faced the correct direction, changed my heading, and away I went. First, I had to grab a snap of the moon rising. This morning's moon was a 4.7% crescent.

I had an image in mind that I wanted to take, but it required a bit more daylight on Pikes Peak. I’d have to wait a few minutes. In the meantime, I snapped a three-image pano of my favorite old tree. According to the locals, I missed seeing it when it was alive by a couple of seasons.

From here on out, I knew the morning was going to fly! I set up my initial intended composition. Once I got this image, I would be free to peacefully run around like a chicken with its head cut off and enjoy the morning. (sarcasm)

While the skies were pink, I made sure to grab a quick pano of the tree alone. There was nothing relaxing about this morning's sunrise. I was scrambling!

Having got the image that I came for, I played around with the composition a bit. In the above image, I went in a bit more tight and then panned across.

To be honest, i’m not a huge fan of these “in-between days.” By that I mean, i’m not a fan of there being partial snow on the ground. I suppose I either like snow or no snow. This in-between timeframe just doesn't do it for me.

I guess I’ll return after our next snowstorm event.

By 0722, I already had my gear broken down and was loading up to get breakfast #2 and begin editing images. Working between two compositions kept me scrambling. I feel like I missed seeing the sunrise as I was too busy fiddling with settings, thinking of ways to recompose, and moving from spot to spot. Hopefully, it’s all worth it. :-)
