Crater Lake Sunrise

The Image

The morning was dark, quiet, and a crisp 16°. Ahead of us was a 2.5-mile hike where, hopefully, the snowshoes would not be needed. Regardless, we were bringing them anyway, just in case. With our cold-weather gear on, our boots strapped up, and our photography gear crammed into our backpacks, we headed off towards the vantage point overlooking Crater Lake that I. personally, had been wanting to shoot for quite some time now.

The hike was rather uneventful thanks to Google Maps. It would have been quite a bit more exhausting finding our shooting location in the dark if we had to constantly zig over to the crater’s edge to check our position only to have to zag back to the trail if we were not yet there or, even worse, if we had passed our intended spot. After a few stops to get oriented, we finally reached the general area where we wanted to shoot.

I came with a shot in mind that I wanted to bag. I envisioned setting up at an elevated location overlooking the lake itself with the island volcano off to the bottom left of the image and the sunrise off to the distant right. Having staked out such a spot, it was time to wait and see if the clouds would cooperate.

All prints, unless hand-delivered, will be shipped 1st class by USPS, with tracked delivery, in an 18"x4"x4" heavyweight mailing tube. Local hand delivery requires prior approval. To obtain approval, contact me via the Contact Me link.
